Portfolio Managers

Brian Bies, CFA is a Founding Principal of Cortina Asset Management and has managed the Cortina Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies since their inception.  He has more than 20 years’ experience in the investment industry.  He specializes in stock selection in the industrial, telecom, technology, and financial sectors.  Brian began his investing career as a Domestic Equities Analyst for the State of Wisconsin Investment Board.  In 2000, he joined a small/mid cap domestic equity team at Strong Capital Management as an Equity Analyst.  At the end of 2001, Brian moved to U.S. Bancorp Asset Management, now known as Nuveen Asset Management, as an Analyst and was soon promoted to Co-Manager of the First American Small Cap Growth Opportunity Fund and associated private accounts.  Brian serves on Cortina Asset Management’s Board of Managers.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Steve Lilly, CFA manages the Cortina Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies and has been with Cortina Asset Management since 2007.  He has more than 20 years’ experience in the investment industry.  Steve provides in-depth research on health care, energy, and consumer sectors.  Steve has been an institutional investor focused on small and mid-cap growth equities since 1996, spending the first decade of his career with Stein, Roe & Farnham, now known as Columbia Threadneedle.  After five years as an Equity Research Analyst, he began managing small and mid-cap mutual fund and institutional assets in 2001.  After leaving Columbia Management Group in 2005, Steve served as Portfolio Manager at Peak6 Investments, a leading options trading firm.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Senior Research Analysts

Jennifer Hanson, CFA is a Senior Equity Analyst and has been with Cortina Asset Management since its inception in 2004.  She has more than 20 years’ experience in the investment industry.  As a Senior Equity Analyst, Jennifer supports the Cortina Small Cap Opportunity, Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies.  She is responsible for equity research in the consumer sector, including the retail, gaming, lodging and restaurant industries.  Her investment industry experience began in 2005 when she joined Firstar Investment Research & Management Co., now known as Nuveen Asset Management, and where she remained until Cortina was founded.  She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Jeff Nevins, CFA is a Senior Equity Analyst and has been with Cortina Asset Management since 2018. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the investment industry.  As a Senior Equity Analyst, Jeff supports the Cortina Small Cap Opportunity, Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies.  He is responsible for equity research in the technology sector, including software, business services, semiconductors, communications equipment and hardware.  Prior to joining Cortina, Jeff was a Senior Equity Analyst specializing in the technology and health care sectors.  In this capacity, he helped manage small and mid-cap growth institutional assets for seven years at Neuberger Berman and five years at RBC Global Asset Management.  Jeff began analyzing growth companies in the technology sector in 2000 at First Analysis Corporation where he served as an Equity Analyst evaluating both private and public investment opportunities.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Research Analysts

Roger Rama, CFA is an Equity Analyst and has been with Cortina Asset Management since 2015.  He has more than 5 years’ experience in the investment industry.  As an Equity Analyst, Roger supports the Cortina Small Cap Opportunity, Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies. He focuses on the broader industrial universe, primarily researching and analyzing stocks in the small cap space.  Prior to joining Cortina, Roger worked as a sell-side equity research analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Education: B.A., Michigan State University

 

Adam Dahms, CFA is an Equity Analyst and has been with Cortina Asset Management since 2016.  He has more than 5 years’ experience in the investment industry.  As an Equity Analyst, he supports the Cortina Small Cap Opportunity, Small Cap Growth and SMID Growth Strategies.  His focus is on the broader health care universe, primarily researching and analyzing stocks in the small cap space.  Prior to joining Cortina, he was a Senior Equity Research Associate at Robert W. Baird & Co.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.
